The Third Side

Past

2012

A multi-disciplinary exploration of control and freedom, youth disaffection and the cult of materialism.

Created with Contact Young Actors Company for Contacting The World International Young People’s Theatre Festival in Manchester, The Third Side is the culmination of a six-month virtual collaboration with Trinidad-based company The Arts in Action Wordsmiths, following a year in which both young companies experienced civil unrest on their nations' streets.

A decade since he directed the production for the first ever Contacting the World Festival back in 2002, Leo was invited to take the helm once more.

The performance combined physical theatre, film, video-art, music, autobiography and spoken word to create a powerful and affecting expression of youth dissatisfaction and a desire for honest reflection in post-riot Britain and Trinidad. Layered with Trinidad's rich carnival mythos, The Third Side provided a raw insight into the frustrations of young people in a time of mass protest and social change.

The project was supported and produced by Contact, Manchester.

"A knockout show. A triumph for CYAC and their audience. We all left shaken, awoken, together. A beautiful, unapologetic exploration of youth and community. Startling."
